Leket Israel is the largest food bank in Israel, and has been a leader and an expert in food rescue nationwide. The organisation sources, collects and redistributes fresh, perishable, quality food, which would otherwise be considered waste from farms, hotels, military bases and catering halls. This is then redistributed to 180 partner non-profit organisations including soup kitchens, shelters, community centres, among others. End users include immigrants, holocaust survivors, children, single parent families, the elderly, youth at risk, and growing numbers of working poor, from all segments of society.

Food Rescue: Good for the Environment
Enormous amounts of energy and resources are expended to grow and process food. When the food remains uneaten, or is discarded as waste, the environmental impact of this waste is considerable. Studies indicate that 40% of food produced in the west is not consumed. As a consequence, leftover food is creating methane gas in landfills and is ultimately aiding global warming and climate change. In addition as we create more waste, more landfills must be built with all their environmental concerns and potential pollution problems including storm-water overflow and the leachate of pollutants to nearby groundwater sources.

JNF has partnered with Leket Israel in promoting the rescue of excess agricultural produce in Israel, for the benefit of the needy, as a way of protecting the environment and making most effective use of Israel’s limited natural resources.

The project will:

  1. Offer a sustainable and cost effective solution to food waste – maximising produce from the land to benefit the needy
  2. Provide important hands-on environmental education activity to tens of thousands of volunteers (50% children and youth)
  3. Foster meaningful connections between Israel and overseas visitors including student programs, missions, and dignitaries
  4. Encourage joint communal responsibility in Israel among all sectors of the population through volunteerism
