If you suffer from nervous tension, stress and/ or mild anxiety, you’re probably only too aware of the impact they can have on your state of mind – and your overall quality of life.

In Australia, it’s estimated that anxiety affects the lives of 1 in 5 people. So, here at Bod Australia we’ve been investigating new ways to help alleviate the debilitating symptoms of mild anxiety. In particular, looking for effective ways to break thorough the unhealthy cycle of worry, irritability and sleeplessness, to improve quality of life for the estimated 4.9 million Australians (in 2017, see ref #4) to be suffering from stress, anxiety and related nervous symptoms.

Our work has resulted in the formulation of a high quality, soothing remedy, naturally derived from Passiflora incarnata – the passionflower. Sedistress Calm Mind has calming properties and is plant-based, well tolerated, non-addictive and non-drowsy. Our fast-acting solution can help to restore your equilibrium within a couple of hours.

Indigenous peoples across North and South America have long recognised the calming effects of Purple Passionflower, or Maypop as it is also known; and its influence has spread throughout the world. Indeed, the effects of Passiflora incarnata as a well-tolerated calmative have been supported by science, and now BOD Australia brings us a premium quality extract in the form of Sedistress.

Passionflower in the treatment of generalised anxiety 1

The results of this pilot, double-blind, randomised comparison trial suggested that Passiflora incarnata extract can be an effective drug for the management of generalized anxiety disorder, with the added advantage of lower incidence of impairment of job performance (ie. less drowsiness).

European Medicines Agency 2

The EMA’s Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC) published their conclusions on the medicinal uses of passionflower. They concluded that, on the basis of its long-standing use, passionflower preparations can be used for the relief of mild symptoms of mental stress and to aid sleep; with certain qualifications regarding age, attention to dosage directions, and contact with qualified medical practitioners.

A Dry Extract of P. Incarnata L as First Intention Treatment of Patients Consulting for Anxiety Problems in General Practice. 3

An open, multicentre, observational and non-interventional study conducted in general practice in Belgium.  A total of 219 GPs participated in the study; between them enrolling 2,928 patients consulting for anxiety problems, and seen at both visits.

Following 2-4 weeks of first intention treatment with a dry extract of Passiflora incarnata L. (capsules), a highly significant reduction in anxiety assessment (HAM-A scores and subscores) was recorded.

The most improvement was recorded in the areas of insomnia followed by anxious mood and tension. On the second visit, the treatment was continued in 80.6% of the patients.

Even acknowledging the limitations of this observational study, the results clearly add therapeutic evidence on the beneficial effects of passionflower.

Follow directions for use. Always read the label. If symptoms persist, see your healthcare professional. Supplements should not replace a balanced diet.
