Passionflower in the treatment of generalised anxiety 1
The results of this pilot, double-blind, randomised comparison trial suggested that Passiflora incarnata extract can be an effective drug for the management of generalized anxiety disorder, with the added advantage of lower incidence of impairment of job performance (ie. less drowsiness).

The EMA’s Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC) published their conclusions on the medicinal uses of passionflower. They concluded that, on the basis of its long-standing use, passionflower preparations can be used for the relief of mild symptoms of mental stress and to aid sleep; with certain qualifications regarding age, attention to dosage directions, and contact with qualified medical practitioners.

An open, multicentre, observational and non-interventional study conducted in general practice in Belgium. A total of 219 GPs participated in the study; between them enrolling 2,928 patients consulting for anxiety problems, and seen at both visits.
Following 2-4 weeks of first intention treatment with a dry extract of Passiflora incarnata L. (capsules), a highly significant reduction in anxiety assessment (HAM-A scores and subscores) was recorded.
The most improvement was recorded in the areas of insomnia followed by anxious mood and tension. On the second visit, the treatment was continued in 80.6% of the patients.
Even acknowledging the limitations of this observational study, the results clearly add therapeutic evidence on the beneficial effects of passionflower.
